The BBC headlines report that Nick Clegg apologises for tuition fees. If you watch his grovelling plea to the electorate for forgiveness it seems that he can't get sorry quite right. Cleggs aides have also insisted that he was not apologising for supporting the policy.
The pledge he made was never to vote for an increase in tuition fees. He says sorry for making the pledge in the first place rather than apologising for voting with his Tory friends for a policy that has resulted in fewer young people from the North East applying to University.
It is like having an affair and then saying sorry for making the marriage vows and promising fidelity. No wonder disillusioned voters are saying Lib Dems, never again.
